combining multiple identical files/torrents

I'm aware that with some serious script-foo and pyroscope/rtorrent, it is possible to "combine" multiple identical torrents. For example, when cross-seeding on multiple trackers, so you only have one copy of the files on your drive. Could something be developped so rutorrent provides such a functionality? Just dump all of the hashes in a database and "auto manage" things? Supposedly vuze can be configured to do things like this?

Just create a torrent(s) with a different piece/chunk size. Problem solved.

Technically, it can be done, but it's a lot of work.
