High CPU Usage

Hello everyone,

And thanks for the great work you have been doing on rutorrent.

Here is my issue :

I am trying to run ruTorrent on a dedicated server with an Intel Celeron 1,20ghz an 1GB RAM running ubuntu serveur 10.04.

Everything is working well except its use an large amount of CPU, often around 100% and it s seems making rtorrent crash time to time.
It may have something to do with hash, dowloads may go at more than 6mo/s, which seems to be too fast for my server.

Do you have any settings tricks to lower the CPU usage? maybe reducing the number of simultaneous socket while downloading ?

Thanks for you advice,

Hi Randac56,

As much as I hate to admit this you issue is most likely to do with ubuntu 10.04 - on ext4 by any chance?

I can't explain it myself - I just know it isn't great for dedi servers.

Thanks to Wonslung I now dont use ubuntu for rtorrent and stick with FreeBSD of Debian at a push.

I use Ubuntu Linux 9.10 on a server like that .. and no problems so far with high CPU usage.
Highest with rtorrent & rutorrent running is like : 2.0
And that is when I am hashing a 50GB+ torrent

there is no way it should be at 100% cpu....are you sure that it's REALLY at 100% and if so are you sure it's rtorrent?

i'd double check some stuff...it may be set up wrong.

Hi,

And thanks for your answers,

@Egghead0 : Damn, I will try to get more information on this point,

@Rascali : I must have a buggy configuration :/

@Wonslung : Yes I am sure :/ my server become incredibly laggy, like two minutes or more to log in ssh or display a simple web page.
I have migrated from Apache2 to Lighttpd to try to improve performance but nothing has changed.
When I download more than 3 or 4 torrents simultaneously, my server is overloaded.

Any lead I can follow?

Are they then all hashing at the same time ?
Or just started at the same time ?

At least turn off hash after the download is done.
If you are the uploader , you made the torrent, you can also mark fast resume when adding the torrent, so you skip the hash part

It happen even while downloading.

For example, this morning I had two torrents running : one download at about 6mo/s and an upload at about 3mo/s...CPU 100% :/

And you see that CPU is 100% by going into SSH right .?...?
Do you also see then that rtorrent is at 100% ?
Or is it maybe some other process ??

Thanks for your interest,

top show the global CPU around 100% and rtorrent going from 15% to 80%...

No other process are taking over 1% cpu wink.gif

yah, sounds fishy to me bro.

are you sure you're not counting 86% idle as part of that 100% or something?

anyways, it's not the norm, sounds like a fucked up install, either in the rtorrent side or the os side of things.

without more data it would be hard to guess

What does "0.0%wa" say in top for you, mostly its disk I/O that slows down our server if many are downloading and rtorrent are very active at the same time or a hash check starts.

But out server really lacks the power some days smiley.gif
