Is the rtorrent.rc example script in the guide wrong, and should be changed? I was told the settings has changed - http://forums.rutorrent.org/index.php?topic=6567.msg17645#msg17645 - but I can't find any info on it.

Which OS are you using? Are you sure you're specifying a valid username (non-root)? Please post the line which you're using to call the script and also post the output of "cat /etc/passwd" I just looked at the code again and gave it a few test runs and it works perfectly on my system.
