Ubuntu Seedbox with rtorrent | rutorrent | pureftpd | multi-user (optional)

it doesn't crash, it simply locks up and shoots to 100% cpu. There is a quota plugin which solves this problem but it costs money.

chown means "change owner" -R means affect all files recursively, username:username is for "user:group" permissions and the last "username" is a directory so it might be easier to understand like this: chown -R user:group directory/

you're missing the point. It's for people who want to CHECK the status and ADD TORRENTS over a low bandwidth link. Ideally, rtorrent/rutorrent will be running on a fast computer with a fast internet connnection. Think "cell phone" or "dial up"

well, i'm not sure it's important to make it required, but: If you want to know how to do something cool: if you build openssh with chroot support (it comes with it in most distros, but if you rebuild to apply the patch you may have to add the proper flag) you can create a chrooted SFTP server...

Thanks OP; great tutorial. Could follow it through with very little ubuntu experience! Just on a quick note, the line "sudo chown -R <username>:<username> <username>" should actually be "sudo chown -R <username>:<username> <userdir>" if I remember right. Yet didn't take me too long to figure...

Not necessary, only a symlink between your home and your www : ln -s /home/<username>/torrents /var/www/torrents or maybe ln -s /home/<username>/torrents /var/www/rutorrent/torrents to keep it under password protection.

Thank you very much subvertbeats. Since I ordered my dedicated server from xirvik.net 3 months ago I was waiting for an amazing guide to show me what I should have done when I set this up.
